YouTube Launches New Childrens App

On February 23, YouTube launched their new app, tailored specifically to children under the age of 13. Unfortunately, at the moment the app is only available in the US, and for Android devices. However, it is believed that the app will roll out worldwide, and for iOS, in the near future.

This new app has a simple-to-use interface, with 8 large tiles displaying images from well-known children’s shows. Above that, are simple icons for TV, radio, educational programs, and an explore option, which will display the top children’s videos.
Clearly this new endeavour is one that will generate a huge profit for YouTube, and largely increase their popularity among parents and children.

There will only be age-appropriate videos available to users, and all inappropriate ads & videos will be filtered out. Overly-inquisitive children who search for an inappropriate topic such as “sex” will be told to search for something else instead.

Parent’s need not worry about their children being corrupted by hours on the internet either, as YouTube have incorporated a feature which allows parents to set a timer, using a password, which allows them to determine how much time their kids can spend on the app. After the time has run out, the app will shut down.

I’m not a parent, but I can definitely appreciate the way in which YouTube saw a niche in the market for mobile education for children, and ran with it. They’ve opened up a whole new world of opportunities and benefits, not just for the kids, but also for themselves, and the video creators. The opportunities are endless, CrashCourse-like videos (see hereWill be popping up for the little ones, with intent to expand their knowledge, in no time. Or at least that’s how I see it anyways!
